12.28.08 :: Barnett Family

A couple of months ago Laurie had asked if I would be able to shoot a family session for her. With two of her daughters going to school in Edmonton and Vancouver getting the family together all at once was always a little difficult, so we planned the session for the holidays. Now as some of you may know, here in Calgary (and most of Canada for that matter) we have had some incredibly cold weather, so we've had to reschedule a few times. But yesterday the snow fell in the morning and the sun came out for us in the afternoon and created a beautiful winter backdrop. Thank you Barnett family for hiking with me through the snow and I hope all toes were accounted for afterwards.

I want to say thank you, to all of you who have made 2008 truly an incredible year for me. To all of my amazing couples this past year, I thank you for allowing me into your lives and trusting me to capture it and to all of my 2009 couples I cannot wait to witness and document your special day. I wish all of you a wonderful Christmas and may all your dreams come true in 2009.

I'll leave you with some of my favorite moments I witnessed in 2008. It takes a moment to load, but I hope you find it worth the wait.

Hello everyone...now as some of you may know, on Monday December 8th I joined in to help those less fortunate then ourselves. A wave of giving started out in Vancouver with the incredible Chris + Lynn and it spread like wild fire across North America. It was called Cans for Comments and the idea was so simple...leave a comment on any post and I would donate a can to the Calgary Food Bank. The more comments...the more cans...simple.

So it ended last night and the grand total was 113 comments...which means a 113 cans of food will be donated to the Calgary Food Bank because of all of you. I thank you all for your support and taking the time to help out those in need.

cans for comments :: extended

First a huge thank you to all of you who have helped out the less fortunate by leaving a comment here as well as on all the other amazing photographers blogs. This has tuned into a international helping hand movement and it all started with an idea by the incredible Chris + Lynn. Now since blogging this on Monday December 8th, I have had over 800 visits...which should correlate to over 800 comments...in theory. Remember all it takes is 30 seconds, be anonymous if you're shy and help out a person less fortunate. So I am going to extend my cans for comments drive until Wednesday December 18th (1 week before Christmas) and lets try and break the 200 mark.

In the economic times we are in, many families are feeling the downward pressure and the need to help others less fortunate has never been greater. So there is a wave of giving happening within the wedding photographic community and I feel compelled to join in. Photographers from around North America are participating in Cans for Comments. How it works...take a peak around the Blog, leave a comment and I will donate a can to the Calgary Food bank. 1 comment = 1 can...100 comments = 100 cans...500 comments = 500 cans...you get the idea.

So the more comments...the more cans...it's that simple.

For those who know me personally, I am not a take my picture type of person. I prefer to be behind the camera, which is one of the many reasons I became a photographer...I get asked to take the picture as opposed to be in the picture. However after many many years of putting it off I decided to get a few images of myself. A.) for my Blog and B.) for a upcoming workshop I am participating in with some incredible photographers (more on that in a bit) So I asked my long time friend, fellow '99 photojournalism classmate and amazing documentary photographer, Chris Bolin of Chris Bolin Photography if he would want to take some pictures. So we spent the afternoon like we did 9 years ago, drinking coffee, laughing and taking pictures. It was kinda fun to be on the other side, but I think I'll stick to being behind the lens.

Yesterday I spent the afternoon with another incredible family, who just happens to be a past wedding client. Last November, Alie and Blake invited me along to document their amazing wedding and turned out to be one the most incredible couple sessions I have captured. So when they asked if I would like to do a baby session with them I was excited to say the least.

Alie, Blake and Lucy, thank you for a wonderful afternoon and I wish you all a wonderful journey.

Since May of 2007, I have gotten to know these two incredible people as they have allowed me to capture their journey together. First was their beautiful fall engagement session where things were said, that has yet to be repeated...and then a few months later it was their amazing winter wedding. We stayed in touch after the wedding and only a few weeks later they found out that they were expecting. I remember talking to Melanie on the phone a few times and I could feel her excitement, joy and nervousness that all soon to be parents feel. Then at the end of September little baby Noah was born and the three of them started down their new path together.

Melanie and Keenan, it has been an honor to watch and share in your joy and I thank you both for bringing me along your journey.

So I regularly receive requests from fellow photographers asking for information regarding such things as:

how I pose couples
how I interact with couples
my black and white conversions
how I use textures
what actions I use
how I market my business
branding

And over the past few months I have been toying with different ideas of how to share this information and have decided to offer telephone mentoring. These sessions will be up to an hour in length and with be at a cost $225.00 You can set up a time to have a telephone session with me where you may ask me anything you would like to know. Nothing will be held back...I am a open book. I will be offering these sessions for a limited time so if you are interested please email me and let me know when you want to chat.
